01What it is
Clan is a framework for managing your own computing infrastructure without a central provider. It generates secrets, configures services and sets up backups for you, and connects your devices through a private mesh VPN. Configurations are deployed over SSH, and machines that already run Linux can join.
What it does
- SecretsGenerated and stored for you, never typed in by hand.
- ServicesConfigured from one description instead of machine by machine.
- BackupsSet up as part of the configuration, not as an afterthought.
- Private networkYour devices find each other through a private mesh VPN.
- Deploy over SSHChanges reach each machine over plain SSH.
- Existing LinuxMachines already running Linux can join the clan.
02Against the charterThe five properties
How Clan meets each property. Read from the bottom up, as on the About page.
- IMinimal base layerRuns on hardware you own. Nothing in the stack is rented from a provider.
- IIProvable integrityEvery machine is built from a Nix description, so its state can be rebuilt and compared.
- IIIInheritabilityThe whole setup is one readable configuration that can be copied, changed and handed on.
- IVCredible exitNo account and no cloud in between. If Clan stopped tomorrow, your machines keep running.
- VRespect for agencyTo be written.
